Don’t Cram your Blog with Ads
May 4, 2007
I’ve seen all too many blogs stuffed to the brim with ads, including ads like Google Adsense, AdBrite, referral banners, links, and more. When I see a blog that has five or six banners in a row at the bottom or side of the page, aligned unevenly, it just makes me want to run away screaming. And what’s the point of even having those ads if nobody’s going to be looking at them, because of course people are going to move on to tidier, more organized blogs.
One thing is, some people just do the whole blogging thing with no interest put into it at all. All they want to do is hurry and get in the business, and start earning wads of cash (which causes ad overflow). Well, it doesn’t work that way. You need to have determination and you need to be in it for more than just the money. True, I blog for money - but I also love doing it because I enjoy it, and I’ve had many a website before that I hadn’t monetized at all. In fact, I just started monetizing blogs a couple months ago, and I’ve been making my own sites for a few years now.
If you’re going to earn money blogging, you’ve got to learn that to make money you, a) have to write some content and get people interested, and b) have to arrange your ideas in an organized, professional manner. Of course there’s more to it but that’s the main idea.
If you have five or six banners lined up unevenly, just sitting there, they’re not going to make you money. Instead, they’re going to drive your visitors away. No one wants to see that. Think about what programs are making you the most money, and which ones aren’t. Now remove all of the ones that are doing you no good, and then arrange the ads you have left so that they blend in and don’t disrupt your blog’s flow.
People hate ads and they’d much rather be reading your website’s content without seeing twelve of them - so limit your amount of ads and banners to two or three, and definitely no more than five. And make those ads blend in! Test spaces and see what ads work best where - but trust me, making a few more cents is not worth losing all of your visitors.

Got something to say?

I agree. Nothing makes me leave a blog faster and not come back then seeing nothing but ads. Especially when the blog is preaching about how to make money online.

[...] 3. Have a good DESIGN. This ties in with offering something unique, but it’s a little more specific. You need a design that thousands of other bloggers don’t use. You also need a design that’s not too fancy and might take too long to load for some people. Your design should look clean and simple, and you also shouldn’t cram it with ads. [...]
