Have Your Own Domain From the Start

June 22, 2007

The biggest mistake I’ve made so far is when I first started blogging. I didn’t plan ahead or do a lot of research, I just expected to learn everything I needed to know on the way. So I went to Blogger and made my own free blog there. My URL was www.super-blogging.blogspot.com. But then just very recently, I realized that having a free domain was a bad thing. I also realized how much I hated Blogger. So that was when I made up my mind, that I would need my own domain and host, and I would be using WordPress. If I had done that from the start, things would have been so much easier!

 If you’re going to start blogging and you’re serious about it, and you plan to blog for longer than a couple of weeks, then DO invest in your own domain and host! In the long run it won’t cost much at all, and then what you earn through your blog will probably pay for your domain and hosting costs. If you start out with a free host like Blogger, it’ll be a huge pain when you have to switch.

A lot of people say there is no difference with search engine ranks on whether you have a free hosted blog or not. Well, I think there is a difference. When I had my old blog that was hosted on Blogger, it took forever to get indexed by Google, and Google hardly visited my site. Not many of my pages were included in searches. But now with my www.superbloggingtips.com domain, I really do notice the difference. Google visits a lot more and I get indexed easily. I think you are better off ranking better in the search engines when you have your own domain. Maybe it’s just me, but I don’t think so.

So be patient, and before you start your blog, do some research on what all it takes. Also do research on the hosting you’re going to get, and your domain. Dosh Dosh tells five easy ways to choose a good domain name, and Make Money Online has a good article as well, so I’ll refer you to those posts instead of giving detail on how to choose your domain name.

I regret not having my own domain from the start, because the switch cost me a lot and wasn’t fun! So don’t make the same mistake I did. Good luck, and if you have any questions, feel free to ask. :)

    @Bayani,

    “Like you, I started blogging in February 2008” – Actually, I started blogging last year – however, like YOU, I’m also enjoying it! Nothing is quick and easy, and nothing is always simple either, but using WordPress I have saved myself loads of trouble and been able to make my site just how I want. I will try to write an article for you soon about moving away from your domain, purchasing a domain, purchasing hosting, etc. Perhaps I’ll make it a series. Thanks and good luck!
