Will Guest Blogging Ruin Your Site?
August 17, 2007
I recently saw a post on Kumiko’s blog titled All Guest Bloggers Must Die. As soon as I read the title I was instantly lured in. But although I do agree with some points Kumiko makes, I have to say that overall, I do disagree with her. Will guest blogging ruin your site? Kumiko thinks so, but I don’t.
Many people agree that they only go to a blog for what its author has to say - and when you bring in the guest bloggers, that totally defies the purpose and takes away all pleasure of reading your blog. But is this really true? Not for me. Kevin has just gotten a team of authors together for his blog, and so far I love reading what each and every one of them has to say. Not only do all of his readers seem happy with the decision, but the authors get a chance for exposure on another blog and Kevin gets some well-deserved time off.
The sole important thing is making sure that you get a decent guest blogger - not one that couldn’t care less. It’s true that people won’t give you their best posts. They’ll save those for their own blogs. But you can’t accept just anything, the quality of the posts still has to match your standards. But if you can find a guest blogger whose writing style is good and they know what they’re talking about, then by all means, give it a go.
And even if I read a guest post that I find absolutely horrible, I just skip over it instead of abandoning the blog completely. If things don’t work out for you, you’re not doomed. Experiment and see if guest blogging is something you’d like to consider. All in all, I’m pretty sure it won’t ruin your site. There are some cons, but I do believe they’re not significant enough and that the pros outweigh them.
I could discuss this topic so much more, but instead I’m going to invite you to share your thoughts. Please, drop a comment and tell me why you like or dislike guest blogging, and your past experiences with it, or if you plan to try it out for the future. Or even think about becoming a Super Blogging contributor! Happy blogging! :)

Got something to say?

Quite valid points and an interesting response. I think Kevin’s site is a bit of a special case as (I think) the writers are paid. Paid content falls into that “middle ground” where you can get some awesome stuff if you can afford it. He can!
nice article, thanks.
As long as the blogger maintains his level of quality in his own posts, I don’t see how it hurts to allow a guest blogger a voice.
I mean, if you’re blogging once a day, don’t let that once a day be a guest blogger. The day the guest blogger blogs should be a two-post day.
Guest bloggers will not ruin your site, no argument about it
