I used to have rules set in my head about what a blog was, and so many people are misled by what others claim a blog is, and how one should be run. But I now have branched out a little more and realized that I can do what I want and not be afraid that others won’t approve or that my blog will suffer for what I’ve done. Because a blog is personal, a blog is whatever you want it to be.
After Kumiko from Cash Quests removed comments from her blog, she posted about how many people said ‘a blog isn’t a blog without comments’ or some variation of that. Kumiko says that that is chaining yourself to a level of thinking that will never get you to success. I used to be like that - a blog isn’t a blog without comments - but now I realize that if you want to stand out and if you want to make your blog truly yours, you can’t be afraid of what other people think and say. You can’t chain yourself down to a small set of rules.
You don’t always have to write blog articles, you can write blog posts too. Articles are fantastic; they are informative, helpful, and a good way to get linkbait. But you can talk about your opinions and thoughts too, instead of always giving information. If you agree or disagree with something, say so! Don’t hold back and keep your blog reserved for only informational purposes, but show everyone who you are and that you have a brain in your head and your own opinions.
It’s your blog and you can’t let anyone else control you and the decisions you make. And if you do something that not everyone is pleased with, don’t instantly change back just because someone told you they didn’t like it. That would be putting other people with more power over your blog than YOU! Be yourself.
If you do something off the wall and unique with your blog, not only are you being yourself but you’re setting your blog apart from the millions of others out there and you’re a lot more likely to be noticed. Most bloggers are too timid to try something new and too scared about what other people think. If you have a good idea for your blog, don’t be afraid to launch it and put it into action. No one can be happy with what you do 100% of the time. But if you like how your blog is going, then that is what matters. It’s your blog and no one else’s. Be yourself and don’t let anyone else tell you what to do.
I know this post has sort of been a mess but I’m trying to get a point across. Too many bloggers tie themselves down because they’re timid about what everyone else will think. Who cares what others think? It’s your blog, you’re in charge, be yourself. I’m not saying you shouldn’t care about your readers. I am saying that you shouldn’t change yourself or hide your true personality because of what some of them might think, and that you should do your best to set yourself apart.

Thanks for this article. Makes me feel better about my blog. I started only two months ago, and perhaps the best piece of advice I got was “You’re looking at blogging all wrong. You have to do it for yourself. Don’t worry about anyone else. Just do your thing and people will read!” It’s still difficult to see how few comments I’m getting. But I keep plugging away….
Kathy - I’m glad you liked the post. There are different ways to go about blogging. If all you care about is getting a lot of readers, etc. then as a blogger you would have to do what the readers want. But then, there is no specific way to blog. If you do something unusual and there’s a reaction of people saying, “that goes against what blogging is about” - they’re wrong.
I checked out your blog and I think it’s pretty interesting! Starting out as a blogger is extremely tough. But if you keep pushing through, then more and more people will notice you and it’ll get pretty easy.
