Would You Ever Sell Your Blog?

October 25, 2007

Question MarkBlogging started out as being something very personal where people wrote about their lives on a daily basis. That’s still sometimes the case today, but blogging has also evolved into a profession, a business. More and more entrepreneurs are starting blogs in hopes of making good money with them for a while, and then selling the blog for an even greater profit when the time is right. So I have a good question for you: Would you ever sell your blog?

Some people plan to sell their blogs from the start; some people choose that path later on, for various reasons. So would YOU ever sell your blog? When you first made it did you intend for it to be sold right from the time it went online, or was that not the case but you’ve now changed your mind? If you would, please tell me why would you or why would you not put your blog up for sale.

The best, most interesting answers will be featured on this blog within a couple of days. I will take the responses I like the most and paste them into a new post, linking back to your own blog and crediting you for what you’ve said. That’s a free link for you and free exposure, so give an interesting and detailed answer please! I would really like to know your opinions on the selling of blogs.

Personally, at this point I don’t think I will be selling my own blog. I love it with a passion, I love working on it, and I love seeing what I can get out of it. Besides, this blog has not been completely business-like from the beginning. While that’s not required, it definitely helps. Potential buyers like a blog they can easily transform into whatever they like, and that’s more difficult if the blog has a personal aspect to it. At this point in time my answer is NO, I will not be selling this blog. No guarantees that that will be my answer forever, but that’s where I stand right now.

What do you think? Would you ever sell your blog? How much money would you ask for it? What are your thoughts on the topic? I look forward to hearing them and possibly linking to you and your response in a future post!

A very good question. Well I don´t mind selling templates but a blog with my content? No I don´t think so.
A blog, for me, is personal but as you say there are those who create blogs only to sell them but it´s a lot of work to get a high ranking blog so you would probably put in a lot of hours. I have however heard that My Space blogs sells really well but I´ve never been interested in My Space.

I have a high ranking blog with many daily visitors and I love that blog. It´s my baby! It was the first blog I ever created, how could I ever get rid of it? No one is able to write the way I do nor keep it up like I do, I´m sure. There are no money in the world that could buy my blog. So no, don´t touch my blog! I´d be devastated if anything happened to it!

(And now on to something else, have you thought about adding a tiny bit of space between the pics and the text? It looks a bit cramped I think)Thank you for your great posts Tay!

Well, there’s never a definitive answer for a question like that. Currently, I don’t think I’ll be selling my blog in the future. It’s really about how much money people are willing to give for your blog. That’s the only questions. Many bloggers (myself included) say we won’t say our blogs. But what if someone offers a boatload of money like $20,000? I’m sure most of us will give in…

If my blog is able to achieve the heights I want it to achieve, then yes I might sell it but then again, those heights are pretty high and will take a minimum of a year to complete.

The money all depends on your earnings and indirectly on traffic. As the people say, blogs sell for 10x the monthly income. But that really depends, blogs can sell for much more than that, especially if you’re at least a year old…

If I sold mine, I would probably have to do a legal name change. :) Haha so would the person I sold the blog to.

I think that most people would sell their blogs. I would sell any of my other blogs if the price was right. Some people would say that they’re too passionate about their blog to sell. What if someone offered you $100 million for it though?

I think most people have a price, and that’s ok. Aren’t we trying to make money anyway?

I agree with Court, everything can be sold if the price is high enough. I certainly have no intentions to sell, but I wouldn’t be against it down the road if the situation was right. It would be difficult though since my blog is just a part of my business’s website. I would rather develop other blogs on the side with the intention of selling.

Well I would sold mine but if the price is right, now my blog is worth something since i make money out of it, but I must say that after all my writing etc, the number really should be high.

Nice post and thanks for visiting bontb blog :)

The best way to get the best price for your blog is to let the buyer make the offer first. I would say it depends on the offer.

Thanks everyone for the responses so far. It’s very interesting to read what you all have to say! Like I said, right now I have no intentions of selling this blog. But Court, if someone offered me $100 million, that’s a deal I cannot refuse. :P

I wouldn’t sell my personal blog, but I would consider selling my acne blog – don’t think anyone would buy it at the moment though.

Well, I don’t have only one blog. I’d love to sell 2 of them, but there are others that I want to keep. Sometimes, the time it cost you is bigger than the price they’ll pay you…

  11. Tay on November 1st, 2007 1:01 am

@MT Host – That’s right. I’ve spent tons of time on this blog and I doubt what I’d earn at this point in time would be sufficient for all that hard work and effort. However, I believe that the more sites you make the quicker you become at building their success. I’m going to start creating new blogs and have in mind from the beginning that I shall sell them, and hopefully I’ll get decent earnings.

But if you don’t have time enough to manage them, you just have to let them go, and sell it for chips. That’s what I did some time ago, I wasn’t posting everyday, I belive I even wasn’t posting every week.
Anyways, I got $15 for the blog.

  13. Tay on November 7th, 2007 1:06 am

@Cyprus Property – You surely could’ve gotten more than fifteen dollars! That’s barely over the price of the domain name. I understand how you can get in a tight position and need to sell a site, but I would never let one go for such a small price. I would at least try and keep it and build it up until I could get AT LEAST a few hundred.

Got something to say?
