I emailed Darren Rowse from Problogger back in the day to share one of my articles with him, and he linked to it - if I hadn't done that, I would've missed out on TONS of exposure. Throwing a contest should only be done once you have a fair amount of exposure. If you throw one and nobody participates its going to hurt your ego.
