Welcome to this week’s Asking The Readers. I invite and encourage everyone to share their response and opinions. Super Blogging has a great community and we want you to participate too, so after you’re done reading, please leave a comment and express your point of view as well!

So now I want to know, how often should bloggers post? Browsing around the blogosphere, I see a lot of different thoughts on this topic. Some people love quantity and having five new posts appear in their RSS reader or inbox for them to devour each day. But others prefer quality, and they’re happy with one to four posts a week or even much less than that. There are so many opinions on this topic, and none of them are either right or wrong – but I’d like to know where the majority stands.

Personally, I’m all for quality. If a blogger is putting out ten worthless posts a day, then in my opinion that’ll only drive people away instead of helping to grow that blogger’s site – I read a lot of blogs, and I just don’t have the time for that. I think anywhere from a couple posts week to once a day is a nice amount – but occasionally two or three posts in one day wouldn’t hurt, just not all the time.

Besides that, if you’re in one niche and write several posts a day, I believe that you’ll quickly burn out and the quality of your content will drop considerably, if you can even come up with any new ideas. Posting around once a day or less helps each post to get more exposure and gives you time to develop ideas for more articles.

That’s how I feel, but what’s YOUR opinion? How often do you like the blogs you read to post, and why? Please share your thoughts in the comments section and we’ll discuss it!

    hi Tay,
Good question asked. Minimum one post and not more than four a day including weekends. As the reader subscribes to more blogs, it is difficult to read all the posts. If more posts are there, the reader just scrolls through without going through the contents.

I post three times a week on Sciencebase.com, sometimes 4/5 depending. I used to post daily but dropped to Mon-Wed-Fri and found that traffic and RSS subscriber numbers still continued to climb. Hoping to reach 3000 RSS by year end (2902 last time I checked).

I prefer to read blogs that don’t post more than once or twice daily, I’ve got several hundred subscriptions in my reader and often end up deleting thousands of posts as unread.

Well for me posting was a daily obsesion, then I got to thinking about my quality was slipping and not up to the standards I wanted to keep so I decided to post when I have my articles researched and polished. On the other had I started a blog for random thoughts too and it helps keep my posts focused on my niche on my main blog.

It is not the quantity that matters but it is the quality. Nevertheless, quantity sometimes will play its role since the frequency of posting should be maintained rather than let it fluctuates.

It also depends on what niche a blog is on. If you are in a tech niche and you have a competitor like Techcrunch and Engadget, you will need to have a higher posting frequency like a few posts per day to keep up with them. On the other hand, a gardening blog will need a much laid back posting frequency. ;-)

I’m with you. I believe once a day is plenty unless you find really great content that you just have to let everyone know about.

I think the ideal frequency really depends on the blog. I post about 5 times a week, and there is no way I could do more without the quality suffering (considering that I need time for other projects). I read some blogs that post multiple times per day and some that only post occasionally. I think it’s difficult to build a large, loyal following without posting at least 3 or 4 times per week, but that’s just my opinion.

I agree with Steven, when he said:

I think the ideal frequency really depends on the blog.

That said, at least one post a week will keep me subscribed to your blog. If you post good quality posts.

Once a day from keeping traffic fluctuating!

Most of the blogs I read post 1-2 times a day. I personally like it best when a blog posts once a day as I subscribe to over 30 blogs and it becomes kind of hard for me to keep up. I like it one post per blog I read as long as the post is informative (that, however, doesn’t mean it should be an essay length).

As for my blog, I’m currently trying to post once a day.

Also, like you, I believe that you’ll burn up ideas very fast, especially if you’re in a competitive niche, if you post more than 3 times a day…

    Thanks for your responses everyone!

I was asking because for a while there, I was doing my best to post every single day, but sometimes skipping Saturdays. Now I’m thinking about dropping it down four or five posts a week. I am trying to find what works best for me and my readers. :)

And like many of you have mentioned, it also depends very much on the blog’s niche – I like what Wayne Liew said a lot – if you have a tech blog, for example, you may need to post several times a day. But if you blog about gardening, that frequency would be a whole lot less.

You all have definitely voiced some great opinions and given me a lot to think about, and I really appreciate you all taking part in this discuss. If anyone would like to throw something else in or say whatever is on their mind about how often bloggers should post, feel free to do so! :)

I’ve heard that you have to be careful on how often you post or the search engines will penalize you if you slow down. Is this true?

  12. Tay on December 22nd, 2007 4:25 am

    Paul,

To be honest with you, I’m really not sure. Of course, it isn’t smart to largely change ANY main part of your site for purposes like that, but I doubt penalization is likely unless you do something huge or against the rules. I don’t think changing from six posts a week to four or five won’t make much of a difference in those terms.

However, that is a VERY good point you brought up so thank you for letting me know! I appreciate it. :)

I usually try and space my posts out throughout the day. That way they can visit at anytime of the day and see new content. My site tries to post at least 1 in the morning and 1 in the afternoon. It has worked out so far! ;)

  14. Tay on December 24th, 2007 3:10 am

    David,

That’s a smart thing to do. For people who DO post multiple times a day, it’s best not to have all of the posts one after the other. Having one in the morning and one in the afternoon is what you should be doing! Keep up the great work. :)

Got something to say?
