@Commodity Trader,

To determine the price of a site, dozens of variables would have to be figured in - as well as thinking of how valuable the site is to someone who's interested in purchasing it. Some important figures would be, like you said, SEO and search engine positions, quality content, nice traffic, backlinks, site age, brand, and many more things.

Actually I'm wondering what a good price for a website is. Some maintenance and SEO should definitly add to the value as a marketing tool.

@CostaRica - You have to start the site at the beginning of December (around this time or sooner would be good). Basically, you are promoting products and items on the site, any kind of items of your choosing. Whenever someone buys one of the items, you get a cut of the price since you're a referral. Since it's around Christmas time, people buy a lot more than usual - this time of year is always the best.

To make money, the site needs to be up and promoted weeks before Christmas, at Christmas, and even maybe a little while afterward to fully make income from all those sales. Then in January, you can sell the site if you like. Good luck. :)

Hi Tay,
I agree. I certainly don't see anything unethical with it. Your last point is very true, you would still have the income that you've earned before selling the site. It is definitely a good opportunity, I just wouldn't be surprised if the selling price came in a little lower than normal based on the circumstances, but you never know. I've been surprised by some other high figures recently.

Thanks for the list. Now I have a new idea how to make money. But what's the real idea? before or after December?

Steven,

I understand your point now. Yes, if I were a buyer I would do my research and realize how young the site is and that the earnings are at their peak because of the season, and I would deduct that usually the site would make a lot less.

However, I don't believe it's necessary to state the site's age (and the sole point of its creation) when you're trying to sell it, UNLESS you are asked - because there is no excuse for blatant lying and that's not acceptable. But if a buyer were still interested in a site despite its age and the holidays, then I'd find nothing wrong with selling it to them at the regular 10x price.

And even if the buyer does decide that the site isn't worth as much because of its young age and the fact that the earnings are peaking during the holidays, you'll still be making plenty more money than you invested, so I still think it's worth a shot. :)

Tay,
I understand that part, sorry I wasn't clear. I'm talking about when you go to sell in January. From the perspective of a potential buyer I would factor in higher than normal earnings when deciding how much to bid on a site.

Steven,

The idea is to buy a website at around beginning of December, not after Christmas. That way you can direct people to your site and they'll be more likely to buy because of the holidays - they'll be getting others Christmas presents. That way you can cash in on everyone's Christmas shopping all throughout the month, and sell the site in January.

Erik,

That's great and I wish you the best of luck! Matt's challenge definitely has a lot of earning potential, and you'll definitely make back the money you spent on the domain at least - you'll have the money from the affiliate sales and then the money from selling the site too. Good luck! :)
