how to tell if a site is downI was using StumbleUpon a few days ago and came across an excellent tool that can easily let you know if a site is down or not. Sometimes when browsing the web and visiting your favorite sites, or even a new site you’ve never laid eyes on before, it won’t load. Then you’ll start to wonder if the problem is on your side or theirs.

Luckily, there’s one tool you should always have in your bookmarks for a time like that - and it’s called Down For Everyone Or Just Me. Upon visiting that site, I was pretty impressed. It was as simple as any site can be made, with a white page and only one line of text. Basically, it says “Is ____ down for everyone or just me?” All you have to do is enter in the site you want to check, and then click on “or just me?” and it’ll tell you.

But like I mentioned, Down For Everyone Or Just Me is a great example of how important simplicity can be. The creators of that site understood that all the visitors wanted was to know if a site was truly down or not - and they didn’t need anything else. This lets the site load quickly and its users easily find what they’re looking for.

down for everyone or just me

So next time you’re wondering if the site you’re trying to access is unavailable for just you or also for the rest of the world, try Down For Everyone Or Just Me. Have you ever used this tool before? Do you know any others similar to it, or any better alternatives? Let us know what you think! Great find. StumbleUpon is wonderful for these types of randomness. I’ve added it to my favorites. Thanks for sharing!

    Nice, thanks for sharing this Tay. :) By the way, there’s something wrong with your 125×125’s. They’re pushed up, overlapping the subscription box… or is it just me?

    @Koka,

    I agree, it definitely is. I find a lot of the tools I come across via StumbleUpon. Glad you liked it!

    @Jug,

    You’re welcome, glad I could help. And thanks for letting me know about the 125×125’s. I haven’t edited the layout of the blog and when I view it everything looks the same as normal, but I’ll check it out! If anyone else has this problem, let me know. :)

    Actually that doesn’t tell the whole story. Apparently http://downforeveryoneorjustme.com/ just sees if the site responds at all to a request and says it is functioning if any data at all is returned.

    A better test is just to use Google Translate services at http://translate.google.com then just enter your URL in the box and have it translate the site from any foreign language into English.

    This also works to get through many firewalls that won’t let you read a website (like the Onion) at work. Some firewalls block Google Translate, but many international companies don’t.

    Yay!  I can’t believe something like this exists.  Thanks for stumbling upon this and sharing.  I’ll be using this.

    yes thats a great site….what i would love is the same concept to automatically check every few minutes to see if a site is down and if it is then shoot me an email to let me know something is wrong….im sure theres something like that out there but havent found it yet.

Got something to say?
